Entrepreneurial and military stories for startup and leadership insight.
I’m just like you, an entrepreneur changing the world by recognizing and engineering solutions for the white space – inspired to impact processes to become a more effective society as a whole. You know the feeling – the excitement, anxiety, butterflies, stress, can’t-sleep-till-the-business-model-is-right type stuff.
I’m Ryan, but Hogan has kind of stuck for the past 20-or-so years. A Baltimore native, I enjoy crab cakes, the Ravens, and the Orioles. But more important than blue crabs and sports is my family. Currently, I live in sunny San Diego with my beautiful wife and three (soon to be four) children – and the laziest Jack Russell ever put on this earth, Charlie. Between the adventure from the Navy, my family, and the liberation of chasing my dreams as an entrepreneur, I am a very fortunate man.
It all started with a moisture wicking shirt and a vision in 2007 – to provide performance training apparel tailored to the specific needs of our nation’s war fighters. A few years and mistakes later, I called a good friend to cofound a five kilometer obstacle course race – later named Run For Your Lives. And we grew. Quick. Zero to $8.1M kind of quick. Along the way I’ve learned the right (and not-so-right) ways of starting and growing a business. The principles learned in school will only get you so far, as entrepreneurs it’s imperative that we study and learn from each other’s adversities. And I will share my stories of success (and failure), outlining the lessons learned along my journey.
Concurrently, I serve in the world’s finest Navy – a career started at the ripe age of 17 because of a life going nowhere fast. And for the past eleven years I have served our country, experiencing things only known by the few who have taken the oath. Throughout my military career, I have studied my superiors; drawing and recording conclusions on leadership – some of which I emulate, and others I avoid. The culmination of leading a private company of thirty great civilians and a division of sixty amazing sailors, gives me an edge and a broader perspective on the realities of enabling full potential from a great team.
